Months ago I bought Quicken 2017 for Mac. I thought it was time to upgrade from Quicken 2005 for Mac. Under the Reports Menu, I wanted two things: Balance Sheet report and Profit and Loss Report. The profit and loss statement is not a personal financial report, because it selects only tax categories assigned to the Schedule C for business tax purposes. Personal Finance Features

Both Quicken and QuickBooks offer a host of personal finance features, including bill payment, expense tracking, check printing and budget creation. You can add your bank accounts and credit cards to each program, and import data from banks. You can also export data and reports from both programs to Microsoft Excel. Quicken’s budget wizard, expense categories and savings plans tools target individuals and entrepreneurs who do not need features to manage employee payroll. Its tools are simple and helpful for sole proprietors who do not have separate personal and business accounts.

Small Business Features

QuickBooks' business features are more robust that Quicken's. Quicken suffices for a one-person operation, and includes business single-entry accounting, expense tracking, profit and loss statements, Schedule C report generation, tax deduction tools, rental property income management and invoice creation. QuickBooks provides all these tools and more, including double-entry accounting, a full range of employee payroll management functions, accounts receivable, inventory control, batch invoicing and third-party add-on support. Quicken also integrates with Mac OS X features such as iCal and AddressBook.

Editions

Intuit offers a range of editions for both Quicken and QuickBooks, depending on your needs. There are four versions of Quicken: Deluxe, Premier, Home & Business and Rental Property Manager. Deluxe and Premier offer features for personal finance, while Home & Business also includes the small business tools. Rental Property Manager includes all of the features of Home & Business, plus rental property income and expense tools. QuickBooks includes five editions, including a Web-based version called Plus that you can use for a monthly fee. The desktop editions include Mac, Pro, Premier and Enterprise Solutions. Plus has the least amount of features, and allows up to five simultaneous users. Enterprise has the most features, including inventory management via bar code scanning, multiple location inventory tracking and integration with other programs.

Price

As of October 2012, Quicken Deluxe costs about $70, Premier about $100, Home & Deluxe around $110 and Rental Property Manager around $160. The price of QuickBooks Plus is around $40 per month, while the desktop versions range in price from $199 to $600 per user for Enterprise Solutions.
